Everything You Need to Know About Airbnb in Nigeria

Is there Airbnb in Nigeria? Are you one of those still wondering if Airbnb exists in Nigeria?

Airbnb stands for “Air Bed” and “Breakfast”. Its origin can be traced to 2008 when two co-founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia from San Francisco got their first major break in the business.

Unable to make enough money to pay for the rent of their place, the duo came up with the idea to rent out their seating room to travelers at a rate cheaper than a standard hotel room. They set up air beds and served their Guests homemade breakfast. This later formed their business name “Airbnb”.

Airbnb in Nigeria

In today’s accommodation rental industry, Airbnb has become the globally accepted nomenclature for vacation or short stay rentals.

Airbnb in Nigeria is largely unexplored territory. Even though a number of people in Nigeria are still in the dark about what an Airbnb service is or how it works, a lot of others are already utilizing this service to escape paying exorbitant hotel bills. Aside from the fact that Airbnb services are aimed at offering accommodation rates cheaper than hotels, they also offer a homely space away from home. For people hoping to learn about the culture of a new place, an Airbnb home will do more for them than renting a regular hotel.

Before the entrance of Airbnbhomes.ng into the Nigerian market space, there was only the foreign-based Airbnb.com attempting to solve the problem of short vacation rentals in Nigeria. While the latter had the advantage of having been in the market longer, the former had the upper hand of being targeted solely at Nigerians and allowed users to pay in Naira as against paying in USD.

Apart from these two major players, there are also a number of luxury apartment rental companies like:

  1. Shortlet Homes
  2. Reuxville Homes
  3. Let and Lodge Apartments
  4. Thevus Homes
  5. Hamborg Properties etc.

While these property rental companies are also meeting short stay accommodation rental needs in Nigeria, they are mostly focused on luxury apartment rentals and do not cater to the needs of regular people which are mostly affordable standard apartment rentals.

How Airbnb Services Works

A typical Airbnb service incorporates a peer-to-peer model. This allows 2 sets of users, the hosts, and the guests. The hosts who are also the property owners list their property which may include shared space, private rooms, or an entire apartment on an Airbnb website. The guests who are also the property renters and who may also be travelers book the hosts’ properties for a short while.

How Airbnb Works for Host

The process is relatively straightforward for hosts on Airbnb websites. It often goes in the following order:

  1. Host list property for rent
  2. Host accepts reservation
  3. Host issues invoice for payment
  4. Hosts confirms reservation

How Airbnb Works for Guest

The process of choosing and making an Airbnb reservation is even way simpler for the guest. It often goes in the following order

  1. Guests searches for homes and chooses his preference
  2. Guests makes a reservation
  3. Guests makes payment
  4. Guest receives exact location and address of the property

Final Words

The emergence of Airbnb in Nigeria is changing the trend of hotel bookings in Nigeria. As the economy bites harder among the low-income and middle class, the demand for affordable accommodations keeps rising.

Airbnb services in Nigeria are a solution intended to meet the need of regular-income folks looking to have comfortable accommodation away from home.
